Hoboken Police Arrest Blotter 6/29/23 - 7/5/23

On June 29, 2023, at approximately 6 p.m., Sgt. Edward Sellick, and Police Officers Samuel Flores, Nicholas Losurdo, and Paul Quinn responded to Church Square Park, 400 Garden St., on a call of a woman touching herself inappropriately. The woman, later identified as 53-year-old Ivecka Leonard of North Arlington, was found to have an outstanding warrant out of Hoboken for urinating in public. She was given a new court date and released.

On June 29, 2023, at approximately 10:55 p.m., Police Officers Christopher Barral and Bianca Arroyo observed 34-year-old Hakeem Lawrence of Hoboken, on the 200 block of Harrison Street and knew him to have an outstanding arrest warrant out of Hudson County, which was confirmed. When they approached Lawrence and advised him that he was under arrest, he took a fighting stance, raised his fists, and stated he was going to kill the officers and their families. Sgt. Edward Sellick and Police Officers Daniel Grossi and Daniel Barron arrived to assist. A large crowd formed and cheered on Lawrence who continued to threaten more of the officers. Eventually Lawrence was placed in handcuffs and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters. He was charged with three counts of terroristic threats and bail jumping. He was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

On June 30, 2023, at approximately 5:10 p.m., Police Officers Daniel Grossi and Daniel Barron were in the area of Fifth and Jackson Streets when they observed 42-year-old Osvaldo Garcia of Hoboken, who they knew had an active warrant for his arrest. Police Officers Frank Francolino and Mark Mooreman arrived to assist. It was confirmed that Garcia had four active warrants for his arrest including: resisting arrest in Hoboken in May of 2023, simple assault and contempt of court in Weehawken in July of 2021, simple assault in Jersey City in June of 2023, and failure to pay child support out of Hudson County in January of 2022. He was arrested, brought to Hoboken Police Headquarters, processed, and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

On July 2, 2023, at approximately 4:18 p.m., Police Officers Mark Mooreman, Harold Milne, Paul Quinn, and Nicholas Losurdo responded to ShopRite, 900 Madison St., on reports of a shoplifting in which the suspect had already fled the store. Officers observed and stopped a woman, later identified as 52-year-old Jennifer Smith of Hoboken, who fit the description of the suspect on the 800 block of Monroe Street. The investigation revealed that while in ShopRite, Smith filled her shopping cart and purse with items totaling approximately $443.68, and then attempted to leave without paying. When store security tried to stop her from leaving, she threatened physical violence against store employees, dumped the entire cart on the ground, and left the store. A search incident to arrest found ten cans of cat food on Smith. She was found to have a warrant out of Jersey City. She was brought to Hoboken Police Headquarters, charged with robbery, and then transported to Jersey City Police Headquarters for processing on the warrant there.

On July 3, 2023, while on routine patrol at approximately 4:05 p.m., Police Officers Jessica Pizanie and Harry Montalvo recognized 38-year-old Chistopher Johnson of Jersey City standing outside McDonalds, 234 Washington St., and knew there to be a BOLO (Be on Look Out) alert issued for him. He was found to have three active warrants, including two for shoplifting at Walgreens, 101 Washington St. On June 15, 2023, Police Officer Damien Bates took a report after Johnson put approximately $409.29 worth of merchandise into a bag and left without paying, ignoring store employees who tried to stop him. On June 13, 2023, Police Officers Geovanni Cruzado and Dylan Archilla responded to Walgreens, 101 Washington St., for a report of a shoplifting in progress, during which Johnson took items valuing a total of approximately $210.07 and left without paying. He was also wanted for a shoplifting incident at CVS, 59 Washington St., on June 12, 2023. Police Officers Rose Kanan and Ricky Truppner took that report. Investigation revealed Johnson attempted to take four packs of deodorant but put them back when store employees confronted him. A complaint was filed for shoplifting on that date. On July 3, Johnson was brought to Hoboken Police Headquarters, processed on charges of trespassing and shoplifting, and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

On July 5, 2023, Detective Fabian Quinones concluded an investigation into a shoplifting at CVS, 59 Washington St., which occurred on June 27, 2023, at approximately 8:25 a.m. Police Officers Rose Kanan and Harry Montalvo took that initial report. Using surveillance footage, Det. Quinones identified the suspect as 52-year-old Anthony Joyce of Hoboken. Det. Quinones, Det. Connor Milne and Det. Sgt. William Collins then responded to 1301 Washington St., the Hoboken Community Center, where they believed Joyce to be, located him and placed him under arrest. He was brought to Hoboken Police Headquarters, processed for shoplifting, and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

On July 5, 2023, Police Officers Harry Montalvo and Samuel Flores responded to Hoboken Police Headquarters to process the arrest of 41-year-old Shovon Smith of Jersey City, who was brought in by Jersey City Police on a warrant for criminal mischief and bail jumping out of Hoboken. On June 18, 2023, Police Officers Anthony Azzoline and Daniel Grossi were in the area of Fourth and Jackson Streets, when a woman approached them to say someone shattered the glass door at her church, Go Ye Therefore Ministries, 64 Harrison St., and that she had taken a photograph of a woman she saw leaving the area on her cell phone. Police Officers Christopher Barral and Frank Lombardo were also on the scene. Officers were able to identify the suspect as Smith. Det. Tyler Soto conducted a follow up investigation which confirmed Smith as the actor in the incident. After being processed in Hoboken, Smith was remanded to the Hudson County Correctional Center.
