In a slightly worrisome trend, the number of coronavirus cases continue to grow this week. (See graph below. Click on any of the data points to see specific details.) The rate of growth is nowhere as rapid as a month or two ago, and it is to be expected as more and more businesses reopen. However, it is still disturbing to see the number continue to climb for the second straight week when the state has essentially only begun to reopen.
As it currently stands, there have been 633 cases of COVID-19 reported in Secaucus. That number is up 2.8% compared to last week's 616 cases. Although that is not a high percentage, it is the same percentage increase as the previous week. In other words, the number of new cases is growing at a consistent rate. By itself, that might not be very relevant since 2.8% is a relatively low number However, the spread of viruses such as this (e.g., the flu virus) usually slow down dramatically during the summer months. Yet, the number of new COVID-19 cases seems to be growing consistently despite the warmer temperatures. Compound that with the fact that more and more businesses will be reopening and kids will be engaged in activities such as summer camps, it is easy to picture the rate of infection picking up again. Hopefully, that will not be the case, and this coronavirus will be contained during these summer months. Otherwise, when flu season starts up again in the fall, we might see a second wave of this disease set things back to the way they were at the height of the pandemic.
