5/29 Update on Secaucus' Coronavirus Statistics

Posted Fri, May 29, 2020, By Staff Writer
Last week's statistics showed that the rate of new COVID-19 infections in Secaucus have gone back up after government restrictions of businesses and social gatherings had been scaled back. But at that time, it had only been one week in which that had occurred, so there was no pattern which showed that one directly correlated with the other. Disturbingly, though, this week's number of new Coronavirus cases continues to rise, and this does suggests that the two are directly related. And if that's the case, it may be a sign that things are indeed reopening too quickly. On the bright side, there were no new cases of Coronavirus related deaths reported this week.

Compared to last week, the number of reported Coronavirus cases in Secaucus went up by 13.9%, rising from 541 cases to 616 cases. This rate of increase is more than double that of last week's which was just 6.3%. Even worse, this is the second week in a row during which new infections have gone back up significantly. Just two weeks ago, the rate of new infections was at an all time low of 3.0%. So it seems like the trend is heading in the wrong direction. In fact, as seen in the above graph, the slope of the curve has gone back to rising relatively sharply. (Click on any of the data points in the graph to see specific details.) With that said, though, this is only the second week of reemerging infection rates, and the number of new cases on a state level are still on a decline. Therefore, it is still too early to conclude that things are reopening too soon, but it's a possibility. Just today, South Korea had to re-close its schools after a resurgence of the virus in that country, so there is definitely a risk factor to reopening. The statistics for next week will prove interesting as they will more concretely show whether reopening efforts can continue as they are or plans indeed need to be trottled back.
