At approximately 11:56 P.M. on May 1, 2020, Secaucus Police responded to Gucci, 50 Hartz Way, on multiple activated burglar alarms. Gucci Security was able to view a live video feed within the store and advised the police that burglars were inside and actively stealing items. Approximately $26,000.00 worth of merchandise was found to be stolen from the store.
Responding Secaucus Police Officers recovered evidence and discarded stolen merchandise near the store. Security for Major League Baseball, also on Hartz Way, reported seeing the burglars running near their property. During a search of the area, Detective Lieutenant Michael Torres located Mecca Nevels hiding in a nearby creek camoflauged by some brush.
Mecca Nevels was placed under arrest without resistance. During a search of his person incident to arrest, Mecca Nevels was found in possession of a quantity of suspected marijuana and stolen merchandise from Gucci. An extensive search of the area for others involved in the burglary was conducted by Secaucus Police with the assistance of a K-9 from the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office. However, the search yielded negative results, but the investigation is ongoing.
“I want to thank the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office for always being willing to assist us with their K-9 resource,” Chief Dennis Miller. “I also want to commend my responding officers who still perform their essential duties without hesitation, despite the inherit risk to themselves during the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic.”
Mecca Nevels, 21 of Newark, was charged with Burglary [2C:18-2a(1)], Theft of Moveable Property [2C:20-3a], Conspiracy to Commit Burglary & Theft [2C:5-2] and Possession of Marijuana [2C:35-10a(4)]. He also had an active warrant from Newark with a bail of $200.00. He was taken to the Hudson County Jail pending his appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court. These charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
