Hackensack Woman Arrested for Embezzlement

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of 64-year-old ELENA CURRIE of Hackensack, NJ, on the charge of theft. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck.

In April 2024, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit was notified of an alleged theft of money from a Bergen County business and initiated an investigation. The investigation revealed that between July 2021 and November 2023, ELENA CURRIE, a former employee, performed 398 unauthorized Zelle money transfers from a business bank account to her personal bank account totaling over $451,000.

As a result of the investigation, ELENA CURRIE was arrested on Thursday, February 13, 2025, in Paramus, NJ and charged with one count of second-degree theft, N.J.S.A. 2C:20-3a. CURRIE was released pending a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.

Prosecutor Musella states that the charge is merely an accusation, and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Prosecutor Musella thanks the Hackensack Police Department for its assistance in this investigation.
