Staying Forever Young with Nutrition & Cooking for One

On January 28, participants in Westwood Recreation’s Forever Young program were on hand for the second Nutrition and Cooking for One seminar with chef Roseanne Brill of the Crafty Kitchen and Nutritionist Marla Klein. The group made Chicken Gnocchi Soup and even learned how to roll their own whole wheat gnocchi. Additionally, everyone was invited to share two additional hearty and healthy soups prepared by Chef Brill. Nutritionist Marla Klein was also on hand to explain the nutritional benefits of low-sodium ingredients and high fiber foods. In November, the group learned about preparing healthy breakfasts. The final seminar in the series, scheduled for March 25, will focus on nutritious snacks

Seminars and learning luncheons have long been a part of Westwood Recreation's Forever Young Program. This year, courtesy of a Bergen County Block Grant the department has been able to add several additional seminars including Fixed Income Budgeting on February 25 at 12:00-1:30pm with Erin Collins of Farley & Farley, CPAs. Ms. Collins will present tips and tools for managing a fixed income budget. A light luncheon will be served at that seminar. Registration for seminars is via email to rciarlante@westwoodnj.gov.

The Westwood Recreation Department Forever Young program is a free fitness and activity program for Westwood’s 55+ community. Since its inception the program has added chair yoga, TaiChi, Creative Writing and Crafting as well as an open Gym Basketball Program to its regular offerings of Mahjong, Art, Cardio Fitness, Strength/Conditioning, Pickleball and Yoga.

The continued success of Forever Young is integral to the Borough’s mission of promoting “Aging in Place” by offering a consistent and well-rounded wellness program. The program regularly partners with outside organizations in offering wellness seminars led by local doctors, nutritionists, chefs and other preventative care professionals.
