Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of 37-year-old JOSUE G. COREA of Fairview, NJ on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, and possession of a weapon. The arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck and the Fairview Police Department under the direction of Chief Vincent M. Bellucci.
On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at approximately 10:10 a.m., the Fairview Police Department responded to an assault at an apartment building on Day Avenue in Fairview, NJ. Upon arrival, officers located a 49 year-old female victim with a large laceration to her head. The victim was immediately transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where she remains hospitalized in stable condition. The suspect fled the scene prior to the arrival of responding officers and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit was notified, initiating a joint investigation with the Fairview Police Department.
The investigation revealed that JOSUE G. COREA, a resident of the apartment building, approached the victim near the common stairwell and struck the victim in the head with a large machete. COREA attempted to strike the victim several more times before ultimately fleeing the scene. At 10:45 a.m., while the investigation was underway, COREA was spotted and apprehended on River Road in Edgewater, NJ by members of the Cliffside Park Police Department.
As a result of the investigation, on January 21, 2025, JOSUE G. COREA was charged with first-degree attempted murder, N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2/11-3a; second-degree aggravated assault, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(1); third-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, N.J.S.A. 39-4d; fourth-degree resisting arrest by flight, N.J.S.A. 2C:29-2(a)(3); and fourth-degree possession of a weapon, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5(d). COREA was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.
Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations, and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. He would like to thank the Fairview Police Department, the Cliffside Park Police Department, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
