News Update from the Mayor
January 17, 2025

Hello. This is Mayor Mark Zinna with sad news today.

This week we lost our dear friend and community pillar, Steve Rogers. Steve was a tremendous individual, leader of the Jewish Community Center, and a person of courage and determination. Steve will be deeply missed by our entire community. Shiva services will be this Sunday at the Kaplen JCC from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and Monday at Temple Emanu-El of Closter from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Our deepest condolences go out to Steve’s family.

The Tenafly Public Schools, the DPW and the Recycling Center will be closed for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, January 20. The East side trash will be picked up as normally scheduled.

We are having a very strong winter in High School sports. Boys Basketball is ranked #7 in the County and they are currently undefeated with an 8-0 record. Girls Swimming is currently undefeated with a 6-0 record. Boys Swimming is currently 4-2. And, Girls Bowling currently has 4 wins, which is the most in a season for the program since 2017.

The Korean Community Center is hosting a blood drive this Saturday, January 18 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Grand Ball Room at the Korean Community Center, 100 Grove Street in Tenafly.

This Sunday at 11:30 am and 1:00 pm the seasonal favorite, Maple Sugaring, returns to the Nature Center. Adults and families are welcome to learn how to identify a maple tree. Discover the history of syrup making and how technology has changed the way sap has been gathered over the centuries. We’ll check the Nature Center’s tapped tree and observe how sap is boiled down to make fresh maple syrup, a sweet treat for all to taste! Register at tenaflynaturecenter.org

The KCC Art Gallery is hosting an opening ceremony for its Pachappa Camp exhibition this Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 5:00 pm. Pachappa Camp was the first Koreatown in the United States. This exhibition presents the history of Korean immigration, with a discussion and book signing by curator Dr. Edward Chang. The exhibition runs through February 15 at the KCC.

The Senior Center is organizing an overnight excursion to see Noah's Ark at the Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster, scheduled for April 29 to April 30. Availability is limited as seats are being reserved rapidly. For information regarding the itinerary and pricing, please contact the Center.

It is Scottish Night at the Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 25 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A family-friendly evening of singing, dancing, bagpiping, poetry and a buffet of tastes of Scottish food in honor of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns. Applications are open for young violinists (ages 13 to 18) to perform at a Master Class on Tuesday, February 18 at 7 pm featuring Tenafly's own Elli Choi, recently awarded third prize at the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels, and winner of the World Monaco Violin Competition at age 15.
