Arrests Made In Connection with Nov. 4 20224 Paterson Shooting

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi announce that based upon an investigation by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Paterson Police Department Shooting Investigation Unit, Jose Ortiz, 31 years-old, from Paterson, New Jersey, and Yesenia Adorno from Paterson, New Jersey were arrested on November 4, 2024, in connection to the shooting that took place on November 4, 2024, in the area of North Main Street and Arch Street, Paterson, New Jersey. Mr. Ortiz is charged with Attempted Murder, first degree, Unlawful Possession of Weapon, second degree, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, second degree, Possession of a Firearm Without a Serial Number, third degree, and Possession of High Capacity Magazine, fourth degree. Ms. Adorno is charged with Attempted Murder, first degree.

At approximately at approximately 8:33 a.m. on November 4, 2024, members of the Paterson Police Department were dispatched to the area of North Main Street and Arch Street on a report of a shooting. Police were able to locate a 46-year-old male victim from Paterson, N.J. suffering from a non-fatal gunshot wound. The victim was transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center for treatment. Police were able to locate a potential crime scene.

The subsequent investigation revealed that Mr. Ortiz and Ms. Adorno were responsible for the shooting. On November 4, 2024, at approximately 10:15 a.m., Mr. Oritz and Ms. Adorno were arrested by the Paterson Police Department, without incident in the area of North Street and Clinton Street in Paterson, New Jersey.

The sentencing exposure on First Degree Attempted Murder is 10-20 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of that term to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act, five years parole supervision thereafter; on Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 42 months to be served before parole eligibility; on Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 42 months to be served before parole eligibility; on Possession of a Firearm Without a Serial Number it is 3-5 years New Jersey State Prison; and on Possession of a Large Capacity Magazine it is up to 18 months New Jersey State Prison

The State will file a motion for pretrial detention against Mr. Ortiz and Ms. Adorno that will be scheduled before a Superior Court Judge. Criminal complaints are merely accusations. Despite these accusations, defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

These investigations remain active and ongoing. More information will be released once it becomes available.
