Mabel Campechano
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi announce the arrest of Mabel Campechano, of Paterson, New Jersey. Ms. Campechano was charged on September 23, 2024, after an investigation conducted by the
Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the Paterson Police Department.
On August 23, 2024, members of the Paterson Police Department were dispatched to a
residence in the area of East 24th Street and 10th Avenue in Paterson on the report of a child who
had been stabbed. Upon arrival, police located a four-year-old victim who had been stabbed
multiple times. The victim was immediately transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical
Center in Paterson for treatment. An investigation led by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office
resulted in Ms. Campechano being charged with one count of first degree Attempted Murder, in
violation of N.J.S. 2C:5-1a(1) and N.J.S. 2C:11-3a(1); one count of third degree Endangering the
Welfare of a Child, in violation of N.J.S. 2C:24-4a(2); one count of third degree Endangering an
Injured Victim, in violation of N.J.S. 2C:12-1.2a; one count of third degree Possession of a
Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-4d; and one count of fourth
degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-5d. Ms. Campechano was
taken into custody on September 23, 2024, by members of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s
Office at 30 King Road in Totowa, New Jersey, without incident.
The sentencing exposure on first degree Attempted Murder is ten to twenty years in New
Jersey State Prison. The sentencing exposure on third degree Endangering the Welfare of a
Child is three to five years in New Jersey State Prison; on third degree Endangering an Injured
Victim, the sentencing exposure is three to five years in New Jersey State Prison; and on third
degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Weapon, the sentencing exposure is also three to
five years in New Jersey State Prison. The sentencing exposure on fourth degree Unlawful
Possession of a Weapon is up to eighteen months in New Jersey State Prison.
Ms. Campechano is currently in custody in the Bergen County Jail. The State has filed a
motion for pretrial detention to be heard before a Superior Court Judge.
A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite the accusation, defendants are
presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, in a court of law.
