Jersey City Man Sentenced to 16 Years for 2021 Stabbing

On Thursday, September 19, 2024, the Honorable John A. Young sentenced Darius Evans, 49, to 16 years in New Jersey State Prison for the fatal stabbing of Tyrone Haskins in Jersey City on January 1, 2021.

Evans, of Jersey City, pleaded guilty to one count of Aggravated Manslaughter in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-4, on May 21, 2024. He must serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole. The State was represented at sentencing by Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Daniel Gilbert.

On Friday, January 1, 2021, at approximately 2:45 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department received a report of a possible stabbing victim found in the area of 333 Ocean Avenue in Jersey City. Responding officers located a male victim – later identified as Tyrone Haskins, 39, of Jersey City – with an apparent stab wound to the torso. He was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximately 3:20 a.m.
