East Orange, NJ, July 24, 2024: A group of 200 students from the East Orange Mayor’s Office of Employment and Training’s (MOET) Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP) will be traveling to Yale University on Thursday, July 25, 2024 to participate in a Community Forum: “Using Community Voice to Prevent Youth Substance Use.”

The event, held in partnership with the SASH (Substances and Sexual Health) Lab of Yale’s School of Public Health led by Associate Professor of Public Health Dr. Ijeoma Opara, is a collaboration with MOET, the East Orange Department of Health and Human Services, and Be the Changemakers’ Dr. Jamila Davis and Angela Pinto, Esq. The SASH Lab focuses on conducting and disseminating strengths-based youth substance use and HIV prevention research.

“My administration is committed to engaging our youth in solution-driven practices to address the effects of substance abuse in our community,” said Mayor Ted R. Green. “We are excited about this opportunity to partner with Yale University to empower our students to raise their voices about substance abuse and how we can help reduce the stigma, increase awareness, and create a supportive environment for those at risk.”

This forum also aligns with the launch of East Orange’s Department of Health and Human Services’ new Teen Survey recently created to gain feedback on a variety of public health issues facing area tweens and teens. The participating students will be the first group to complete the survey and help inform decision-making on planned youth wellness initiatives in the city.
