Jersey City Appoints Laura Tacuri as New Tax Assessor

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Mayor Steven M. Fulop is pleased to announce Laura Tacuri as Jersey City’s new Tax Assessor following 25 years of public service as a city employee specializing in financial management. This promotion comes just five years after Ms. Tacuri became Hudson County’s first naturalized Ecuadorian appointed as Deputy Tax Assessor.

“I am honored because Jersey City has been my home since I came to the U.S. in 1998 from Ecuador. I feel so proud and honored that Mayor Fulop gave me the opportunity to help lead this city, the place that welcomed and nurtured me,” the newly appointed Tax Assessor explained. “I am who I am because of Jersey City.”

Mayor Fulop expressed confidence in the appointment, stating, “Laura Tacuri brings over 25 years of experience in tax administration and municipal finance to her new role in upholding the highest standards of accountability and efficiency in tax administration. Her expertise in financial management and commitment to serving the community make her an ideal candidate to oversee Jersey City’s tax assessment efforts.”

Laura Tacuri began her career with the city in 1999 as a summer intern with then Councilwoman Viola Richardson. Attributing her strong work ethic to her parents, Ms. Tacuri spent the next 25 years working her way up in the Tax Assessor’s Office while earning specialized certifications and degrees in financial management from New Jersey City University (NJCU).

Tacuri has led the office as Acting Tax Assessor for several months following the retirement of her predecessor, Edward Toloza, whose career with the city spanned 30+ years under five different administrations.

Laura Tacuri“Having served in various capacities within the field of taxation, Laura Tacuri possesses a comprehensive understanding of local tax codes and regulations,” said Business Administrator John Metro. “With her career experience and expertise, Ms. Tacuri will help bring new ideas and expand services for our taxpayers.”

The Tax Assessor is a statutory officer licensed by the state of New Jersey. Therefore, they serve as a state employee to maintain autonomy.

As Tax Assessor, she will oversee the assessment of all real property in the city, enforce tax laws, and assist taxpayers in Jersey City. Her leadership will play a crucial role in maintaining the financial stability and vitality of the city.
