Arrest Made In Connection to the October 3, 2023 Shooting In Paterson

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department, in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Brayan Caraballo, a 19- year-old male from Paterson, has been charged in connection to the October 3, 2023 homicide which occurred in the area of Broadway and Rosa Parks Boulevard in Paterson. Brayan Caraballo is charged with Murder, first degree; Conspiracy to Commit Murder, first degree; Attempted Murder, first degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, second degree; and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, second degree.

On October 3, 2023, at approximately 3:47 p.m., the Paterson Police Department was dispatched to the area of Broadway and Rosa Parks Boulevard in the City of Paterson on a reported shooting. Three victims with gunshot wounds were located. The first victim, Jerrell Wright, a twenty-three-year-old male from Riverdale, New Jersey, sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and was subsequently pronounced deceased at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center. The remaining victims, Shaheem Clark, a nineteen-year-old male from Elmwood Park, New Jersey, and Charles Obee, a fifty-seven-year-old male from Paterson, survived. The subsequent investigation resulted in the identification of Brayan Caraballo as one of the individuals involved in the shooting. A 16-year-old male was previously arrested for his participation in the shooting and is currently detained pending further court proceedings.

Brayan Caraballo was arrested in Pennsylvania and is currently awaiting extradition to New Jersey. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office will file a motion for pre-trial detention which will be heard by a Superior Court Judge at a date and time to be determined by the Court.

Murder has a sentencing range from a minimum of 30 years up to life imprisonment; the crimes of Conspiracy to Commit Murder and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (First Degree) have a sentencing range between 10 years and 20 years in prison; the crimes of Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose and Unlawful Possession of a Handgun (Second Degree) each have a sentencing range of 5 to 10 years in prison.

Criminal complaints are merely accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

This investigation remains active and ongoing. More information will be released when it becomes available.
