North Bergen Man Charged in Murder-For-Hire Scheme

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Major Case Unit has arrested a North Bergen man in connection with a murder-for-hire scheme.

Miguel Cortes, 37, is charged with Conspiracy to Commit Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2a(2)/2C:11-3a(1), a crime of the first degree. He was arrested on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, outside of his residence on Paterson Plank Road and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility. The State has filed a motion for detention in this matter, which is tentatively scheduled for Monday, May 20, 2024.

On Thursday, May 9, 2024, the North Bergen Police Department received a tip of a possible murder-for-hire scheme. The investigation found the defendant offered money to another individual to murder a female known to Cortes. The intended victim was not injured.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Major Case Unit and the North Bergen Police Department with the investigation and arrest. The above charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6)
