JERSEY CITY, NJ – Mayor Steven M. Fulop joins the Department of Public Works and Office of Cultural Affairs to host the annual "Great Jersey City Cleanup," scheduled for May 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at locations in all six wards.
Residents, elected officials, community leaders, and civic organizations will join forces to clean neighborhood parks, pick up litter and debris on streets and sidewalks, and plant flowers to enhance public spaces. Since the start of this initiative in 2016, nearly 5,000 volunteers have helped clean and remove a total of 18 tons of garbage and recycling.
“The Great Jersey City Cleanup has become a staple event that unites our community in a common cause of maintaining a clean and sustainable environment for improved public health while simultaneously fostering a sense of pride and camaraderie among residents,” said Mayor Fulop.
Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to join this city-wide endeavor. Participants can engage in various activities, including litter pick up, graffiti removal, park maintenance, and more.
“With the support of dedicated volunteers and local partners, this year's event promises to be even more impactful,” adds John Lynch, DPW’s Director of Administrative Services, who leads the Great JC Cleanup operation. “By working together, we can make an important difference in enhancing the overall cleanliness and appearance of our beloved city.”

- Ward C: Journal Square Plaza
- Ward D: Riverview Park
- Ward E: Hamilton Park
- Ward F: Arlington Park
“Our efforts extend far past the one-day event to encourage all community members to maintain a clean and healthy community. We encourage everyone to join us as we come together to positively impact our city and demonstrate the power of community collaboration. Together, we can make Jersey City cleaner, healthier, and more vibrant for everyone,” concludes Omni Aviv, who oversees the Office of Community Engagement and Volunteerism and has mobilized participants for the Cleanup since 2017.
Gloves and trash bags will be provided at each location. Limited equipment is available; therefore, volunteers are encouraged to bring their brooms, rakes, and litter grabbers wherever possible. For more details and to register, please visit the website here.
