Fairfield (NJ) – The Fairfield Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance in helping to identify two suspects in a diversion theft that occurred in Fairfield on April 2, 2024. On that date at approximately 1:35 pm,an individual described as a Hispanic male in his 30’s approached two separate occupied vehicles in the parking lot of the Chase Bank on Passaic Avenue. This male approached both vehicles separately, informing the drivers of thumb tacks scattered near their tires. While distracted, it is alleged a second individual, described as a Hispanic female in her 20’s, entered one vehicle and stole an envelope containing $1,200 cash. They were seen leaving the area in a black Nissan Rogue with no front license plate. Surveillance of the area at this time has not been able to identify a rear registration on that vehicle.

The attached images are of the suspect vehicle from neighboring businesses. Both the male and female were said to have been speaking in Spanish to the victims. No further descriptions are available until detectives are able to review the Chase Bank camera footage.

“We have had several instances over the years of these types of diversion thefts,” said Public Information Officer Stacy Chiarolanza. “The suspect(s) distract the victim by telling them there is some type of issue with their vehicle, to lure the person from their car. When the victim exits, a second suspect will enter and take money that was just withdrawn or has yet to be deposited. In most instances these are large amounts of cash. The Fairfield Police Department reminds the public to be diligent while carrying large amounts of money in order to avoid becoming a victim of this type of crime. If possible, do not travel alone in these instances and always be aware of your surroundings.”

This is still an active investigation. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed these encounters is asked to call the Fairfield Police Department at 973-227-1400. All calls and information will be kept confidential.
