Tenafly Compost Pilot Program

Posted Wed, Jul 26, 2023, From Borough of Tenafly

Tenafly municipality has created a pilot community composting program for 100 homes in Tenafly. This pilot runs from October 1st, 2023, to March 1st, 2024.

Over this six-month period, participating homes can make use of compost drop-off sites at the recycling center and at Sunnyside Park. Once you've signed up, you can access the sites through a combination lock.

This program will cost participating homes $15 per month for 6 months and a one-time startup fee of $16+tax starting on October 1st. The cost includes:
  • An airtight bin for your home
  • Liners for your bin
  • A virtual educational session about how to compost
  • Information on where your food scraps are going

How does it work
  1. Sign up
  2. Receive the bin and liners at your door
  3. Fill bin with food scraps
  4. Drop-off at a Tenafly drop-off site
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 at your convenience

Why should Tenafly compost?
  • When you throw away organic waste, it ends up in landfills and releases methane, a potent and harmful greenhouse gas.
  • The average Bergen County household throws away 14 lbs of food waste per week. This makes up around 30% of all household trash!
  • Throwing out food waste is bad for the environment and costs Tenafly hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.
  • Your garbage will be less smelly!

Sign up today - spots are limited and will go fast!
