Jersey City Man Charged in Connection with Fatal Hit-and-Run

On Friday, January 26, 2024, the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit arrested a 71-year-old man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision that occurred in Jersey City on October 20, 2023.

Mohammad Ali, of Jersey City, is charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Death in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-5.1, a crime of the second degree, and Endangering an Injured Victim in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.2a, a crime of the third degree. He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus and released pending his first court appearance, which is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, February 13, 2024.

On Friday, October 20, 2023, at approximately 6:45 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a pedestrian struck in the area of Fairview Avenue and Monticello Avenue. Responding officers located a male victim – later identified as Mumtaz Chaudhry, 85, of Jersey City – in the area of Fairmount Avenue and Summit Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
