Man Arrested in Connection with 2021 Homicide

On Thursday, January 11, 2024, Tybear Miles, 28, was arrested in South Carolina for his role in the 2021 shooting death of Ahmad McPherson in Jersey City.

Miles, of Jersey City, is charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3a(1)(2), Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1), and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1). He was arrested in Spartanburg, South Carolina, by the Spartanburg Police Department in coordination with the United States Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force. He is currently being detained at the Spartanburg County Detention Center as a Fugitive from Justice pending extradition to New Jersey.

On Saturday, June 5, 2021, at approximately 10:05 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department received a report of gunshots fired in the area of Stegman Street and Martin Luther King Drive. Responding officers located a male victim – later identified as Ahmad McPherson, 22, of Jersey City – with an apparent gunshot wound(s) to the torso. He was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 10:40 p.m. The Regional Medical Examiner determined the Cause of Death to be Gunshot Wounds to the Torso and the Manner of Death to be Homicide.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit, the United States Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Jersey City Police Department, and the Spartanburg Police Department with the investigation and arrest. The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
