Paterson Man Found Guilty of Second-degree Aggravated Assault

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announces that Walter A. Williams, 30, of Paterson, was found guilty after a jury trial before the Honorable Joseph A. Portelli, J.S.C.

Jury selection commenced on January 17, 2023, and the trial started on January 30, 2023. On February 6, 2023, the jury returned guilty verdicts on second-degree Aggravated Assault and third-degree Theft from a Person. On the Aggravated Assault count Mr. Williams is exposed to a term of imprisonment of up to ten (10) years in New Jersey State Prison with 85% to be served before parole eligibility in accordance with the No Early Release Act and up to five (5) years in New Jersey State Prison on the Theft from a Persson count. Mr. Williams was remanded to the Passaic County Jail pending sentence. Mr. Williams’ sentencing is scheduled for April 25, 2023, in front of the Honorable Joseph A. Portelli, J.S.C..

The State presented evidence at trial that on November 15, 2020, at approximately 6:00 p.m., Mr. Williams assaulted, Mr. Luis Rey, 62, in the area of 442 Broadway in Paterson, NJ. Specifically, Mr. Williams took Mr. Rey and slammed him onto the concrete sidewalk resulting in a broken collarbone, several broken ribs, and a head laceration. In addition, certain property that Mr. Rey had in his possession, prior to the assault, was taken by Mr. Williams.

The State was represented by Assistant Prosecutor Shane D. Overgaard. Mr. Williams was represented by attorney Joel M. Harris, Esq.
