Hawthorne Man Convicted of Aggravated Manslaughter

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announces that Tyheem Jones, 40, of Hawthorne, NJ was found guilty on November 3, 2023, after a jury trial before the Honorable Joseph Portelli J.S.C. of Aggravated Manslaughter, in violation of N.J.S.A 2C:11-4(a)(1).

Jury selection commenced on October 5th, 2023. On November 3, 2023, following approximately one and a half days of jury deliberations, the Jury returned a verdict of guilty for Aggravated Manslaughter.

The State presented evidence that on August 27, 2020, Tyheem Jones along with a juvenile and other unidentified suspects assaulted Nicolas Reyes in the area of Auburn Street and Godwin Avenue following a shooting incident that had occurred on Godwin Avenue minutes earlier. Evidence of the assault was captured on surveillance camera which depicted the entirety of the incident, which lasted approximately eleven minutes.

A sentencing date was scheduled before the Honorable Joseph Portelli, J.S.C. for January 25, 2024.

The sentence exposure on Aggravated Manslaughter in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-4(a)(1) is 10- 30 years New Jersey State Prison, of which 85% must be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act.

Passaic County Senior Assistant Prosecutor Evan Mongiardo represented the State during the jury trial before Judge Portelli, and the defense was represented by Joel Harris Esq.
