Man Charged in Fatal Shooting on Bergen Avenue

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit has charged a 24-year-old man in connection with the fatal shooting of Tyreef Robinson in Jersey City on Saturday, March 4, 2023.

Brandon Montague, of Jersey City, is charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3a(1), Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1), and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a. He was arrested on Thursday, March 9, 2023, in Newport News, Virginia by the United States Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force in conjunction with the United States Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force. He is being detained at the Newport News Jail as a Fugitive from Justice pending extradition to New Jersey.

Shortly after 10:10 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a shooting in the area of 2 Bergen Avenue. Responding Officers located a male victim – later identified as Tyreef Robinson, 34, of Jersey City – with an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:27 p.m. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Officer determined the Cause of Death to be a Gunshot Wound to the Torso and Bilateral Lower Extremity and the Manner to be Homicide.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Homicide Unit, the United States Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, the United States Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, and the Jersey City Police Department with the investigation and arrest. The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6)
