The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Insurance Fraud Unit has arrested two Jersey City men on charges relating to falsified information they provided to an auto insurance company to receive compensation for medical treatment.

Shelton Sutton, 36, and Kevin London, 36, are each charged with one count of Insurance Fraud in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:21-4.6a, a crime of the third degree. Sutton is additionally charged with one count of Conspiracy to Commit Insurance Fraud in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2a(1) and 2C:21-4.6a, a crime of the third degree. Sutton was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Jersey City on Monday, April 3, 2023 while London was arrested on Thursday, February 2, 2023.

The investigation revealed Sutton was involved in a motor vehicle collision in Jersey City on March 20, 2022, while driving a Mercedes Benz owned by London. Sutton identified himself as London to law enforcement during the initial collision investigation. London and Sutton both later sought medical treatment through a claim with Progressive Insurance. In their claims, London identified himself as the driver and Sutton reported being a passenger. Investigators later determined Sutton was the operator and sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the collision.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Insurance Fraud Unit with the investigation and arrest. The above charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
