Man Arrested During Homicide Investigation

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating the shooting death of a 17-year-old male that occurred on Saturday, June 24, 2023.

At approximately 8:02 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a shooting in the area of 16th Street and Coles Street. Upon arrival, responding officers located an injured male – later identified as Isaiah Velasquez, 17, of Jersey City – with an apparent gunshot wound to the torso. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center and pronounced dead at approximately 8:57 p.m. The Cause and Manner of Death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

During the course of the investigation, Isaiah McCord, 22, of Bayonne, was charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3a and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a. He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus on Sunday, June 25, 2023 and is being detained at the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are actively investigating this case.
