Man Sentenced For 2021 Fatal Shooting In Jersey City

On Monday, August 14, 2023, the Honorable Carlo Abad, J.S.C. sentenced Ariel Dumit, 38, of Florida, to 30 years in New Jersey State Prison for 2021 shooting death of Christian Parra, 34, of Jersey City.

Dumit was convicted at trial of Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3A(1)(2), a crime of the first degree; Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purposes in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4A(1), a crime of the second degree; and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5B(1), a crime of the second degree, on Tuesday, April 18, 2023. He must serve 30 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole. The State was represented in this matter by Hudson County Assistant Prosecutors Erica Bertuzzi and Luisa Florez.

On Sunday, February 28, 2021, at approximately 8:18 p.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to the BJ’s Parking Lot at 396 Marin Boulevard in Jersey City on reports of a shooting. Responding officers found a male victim – later identified as Christian Parra, 34, of Jersey City – with an apparent gunshot wound to the torso. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9 p.m. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the Cause of Death to be a Gunshot Wound to the Torso and the Manner of Death to be Homicide.
