EAST ORANGE, NJ (June 15, 2023) — Today, East Orange Mayor Ted R. Green joined Genesis Companies, East Orange Housing Authority (EOHA) and The Metro Company to celebrate the ribbon cutting of 60 new affordable homes with supportive services for seniors.

“East Orange’s seniors deserve a good quality of life and a vibrant place to call home, and these new affordable apartments with wraparound services are an incredible source of pride for our community,” said East Orange Mayor Ted R. Green. “I am humbled and honored to have this building bear my name as I have always been a strong advocate for quality affordable housing for everyone, but especially the most vulnerable among us. Thank you to Genesis Companies and the East Orange Housing Authority for helping to reinvest in the people of East Orange.”

The building is named after Mayor Green, who served as an EOHA Board Member for more than a decade before his election as mayor of East Orange. Under his pivotal leadership, the funding and support for this project was made possible.

Following a groundbreaking in 2021, Genesis Companies, fellow co-developer The Metro Company and the East Orange Housing Authority (EOHA) completed the 60-unit, 61,000-square-foot senior supportive housing building in Spring 2023. Residents began moving into their new homes earlier this year, which are 100 percent affordable. Of the 60 units, 15 are set aside for people who have experienced homelessness and who can access supportive services.

“There is an urgent need for quality and affordable residences for low, and moderate-income seniors and disabled residents in New Jersey. The Ted R. Green senior apartments provide a new, and affordable senior housing facility with amenities that offer a higher quality of living for all its residents,” said New Jersey Lt. Governor Sheila Y. Oliver, who serves as the Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs.

“Supporting our senior community members is an essential part of how we build strong, sustainable neighborhoods, which is why we’re extremely proud to stand with the East Orange community today,” said Nicole Lockett, Genesis Companies Managing Director. “This project is a testament to what we can accomplish together through meaningful public-private partnerships where we work together to solve our community’s housing challenges.”

“Today is a momentous occasion for the East Orange Housing Authority as we celebrate these new homes for our residents,” said Wilbert Gill, Executive Director of EOHA. “This project signifies our commitment to investing in the people who have been a part of our community for so long, and we are grateful to our partners including Genesis Companies for bringing this project to completion.”

“There is no one-size-fits-all solution to affordable housing or for inviting senior residents to age in place,” said Fernando Robledo, AIA, Sr. Project Manager and Associate for DMR Architects. “In this case, we created an attractive and engaging facility that also addresses this population’s need for community involvement and other special services.”

The Ted R. Green Senior Residences project is part of the Service for Independent Living program. Supportive services for residents are provided through Bridgeway Rehabilitation Services and the Housing Authority’s existing programs.

The project was financed with support from Citibank, N.A, Bank of America, National Equity Fund LIHTC Equity, US Department of HUD and Federal Home Loan Bank AHP Grant.
