On September 7, 2023, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Police Officers Samuel Flores and Harold
Milne responded to Hoboken Police Headquarters to process the arrest of 46-year-old Benjamin
Brito of Jersey City, who was brought in by New Jersey Transit Police Officers. Brito was found
to have an outstanding warrant for criminal mischief out of Hoboken. He was processed and
transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
On September 7, 2023, at 8:10 p.m., Police Officer Damien Bates and Sgt. Edward Sellick
responded to the 900 block of Castle Point Terrace on reports of someone ringing doorbells. The
investigation revealed 26-year-old Jethro Sylverene of Philipsburg rang a doorbell and attempted
to gain access to a residence. The victim reported that Sylverne had done the same thing multiple
times before, and it was learned he was previously arrested for trespassing at the same property.
A complaint was issued against Sylverne charging him with stalking. The next day, on
September 8, 2023, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Police Officer Christopher Barral observed
Sylverne walking near the intersection of Garden and Third Streets. Sgt. Adam Colon stopped
him nearby and placed him under arrest. Police Officer Joshua Campoverde and Jason Montalvo
responded to Hoboken Police Headquarters to process Sylverne after which, he was transported
to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
On September 8, 2023, at approximately 9 a.m., off-duty Lt. David Olivera observed a man he
knew to be 44-year-old Joseph Dietz of Bayonne walking through Stevens Park. Lt. Olivera
knew Deitz to have an active warrant out of Hoboken for aggravated assault, unlawful
possession of weapons, and possession of weapons for unlawful purposes. Sgt. Roary Miller and
Police Officer Michael Aviles located Dietz near the intersection of Fourth and River Streets. He
was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters where he was processed, and then
transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility. The warrant stems from an incident on
September 5, 2023, at approximately 1:25 p.m. when Police Officers Frank Lombardo and
Jessica Pizanie responded to City Hall, 94 Washington St., on reports of a man, later identified as
Deitz, brandishing a pair of scissors at security personnel. Deitz refused to go through a metal
detector and then became irate, grabbing what turned out to be broken scissors out of his pocket.
The security officer struggled with Deitz, who ultimately left the building. After observing the
video surveillance footage, officers issued a complaint against Deitz with the charges listed
above.
On September 8, 2023, at approximately 7:20 p.m., Sgt. Edward Sellick was on routine patrol,
when he was flagged down by a man who says his group was approached by a man on the 100
block of Washington St., who claimed he had a gun and threatened to kill them. Police Officers
Samuel Flores and Dominick Allegretta responded and observed a man, later identified as 42-
year-old David Robinson of Jersey City, fitting the description of the suspect nearby. Sgt.
William Collins, Sgt. Roary Miller, Det. Bret Globke, Det. Ryan Houghton, and Police Officer
Christopher Barral also arrived on scene. The victim identified Robinson as the actor. He was
searched and no weapons were found. Robinson was placed under arrest and transported to
Police Headquarters. He was found to have three warrants for having an open container out of
Hoboken. Robinson was additionally charged with making terrorist threats and transported to the
Hudson County Correctional Facility.
On September 10, 2023, at approximately 3:50 a.m., Police Officers Andrias Bonilla, Marc
Lombardi, and Daniela Simone responded to the area of Willow Avenue between Fifth and Sixth
Streets on reports of a potentially drunk man walking into a building and leaving with a package.
The caller last saw the man walking on Willow Avenue. While driving toward the area, officers
observed a man carrying a large package who matched the description given by the caller. The
man, later identified as 41-year-old Julio Ortiz of Union City, was found to have a warrant out of
Union City, and another out of Jersey City. He was arrested and a search incident to arrest
located two glass cylindrical pipes commonly used to smoke CDS, two pills, and a box cutter.
The package in his possession was addressed to another person. The original caller confirmed
Oritz as the actor. Ortiz was charged with possession of prescription and/or legend drugs, theft of
movable property, and burglary. He was found to have warrants out of Union City and Jersey
City. He was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
On September 11, 2023, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Police Officers Joshua Campoverde and
Michael Aviles picked up 25-year-old Tony Porter of Glassboro at the Monmouth County
Correctional Facility. Porter had an outstanding warrant for shoplifting out of Hoboken from
January 3, 2023. On that date, Police Officer Michael Straten responded to ShopRite, 900
Madison Street, on reports of a shoplifting. A follow up investigation by Police Officer Chelsea
Tamborra identified Porter as the suspect and a warrant was issued. Upon return to Hoboken,
Porter was processed on shoplifting charges and transported to the Hudson County Correctional
Facility.
On September 11, 2023, at approximately 9:05 p.m. Police Officers Rose Kanan and Mark
Mooreman responded to the area of Columbus Park, on reports of a man causing a disturbance
and damaging cars. Sgt. Roary Miller and Police Officers Cynthia Rivera and Damien Bates also
responded. Witnesses pointed out the man, who was later identified as 28-year-old Tashae
Castillo of Hoboken. When officers approached, Castillo became aggressive, made vulgar and
inappropriate comments to them, and then lunged toward one, despite officer commands to stay
back. As officers attempted to arrest him, Castillo resisted by tensing his arms and then flailing
his body and arms, at one point causing minor injuries to another officer. Further investigation
revealed Castillo had smashed windows of multiple cars and yelled racial slurs at juveniles and
damaged one of their scooters by throwing it to the ground. He also got into a verbal argument
and then a physical altercation with the juveniles. Castillo was transported to Hoboken Police
Headquarters and charged with criminal mischief, aggravated assault on a law enforcement
officer, bias intimidation, simple assault, and resisting arrest. He was transported to the Hudson
County Correctional Facility.
