Newark, NJ –- April 14, 2023 — The City of Newark will host a “Slam Dunk the Junk” event on Friday, April 21, from 8 a.m. to noon, in observance of Earth Day 2023.
Individual residents as well as teams from businesses, community organizations, schools, and other groups are invited to participate in the citywide program, which will remove litter and garbage from sites across Newark and promote its recycling efforts. Teams can clean pre-selected locations or choose their own and the City will provide equipment for removing trash and litter. Deadline to pre-register is Wednesday, April 19.
“Together, all Newarkers are responsible for the positive conditions we have created and maintain in our city. We are also – each of us – accountable for its cleanliness, and for making daily choices that contribute to sustainability and protect our city environment,” said Mayor Baraka.
“Earth Day 2023 is the perfect occasion to recommit ourselves to our ecosystem by cleaning up the trash and litter from our streets, parks, and neighborhoods. I invite everyone to register for our citywide cleanup and support our efforts. Together, through collaboration, we will continue to “Love Newark, Keep it Clean,” he added.
Participants can register and gather for the event at the Department of Public Works’ Division of Recycling, located at 62 Frelinghuysen Avenue from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. They will clean up their chosen or designated sites from 9 a.m. to noon, and return to the division a for free lunch from noon to 1 p.m.
The event is co-sponsored by the New Jersey Clean Communities Council.
