Mayor Ras J. Baraka Statement On Close Of National Pride Month And Upcoming Newark Pride Week

Posted Fri, Jun 30, 2023, From City of Newark

“As Pride Month draws to a close across the nation, the City of Newark expresses its gratitude for our LGBTQIA+ residents and recognizes their countless contributions to every facet of our city life. We treasure all members of this community, which continually contributes to Newark’s growth and has distinguished itself as an integral part of our cultural richness and pride.

“Although Newark has held many LGBTQIA+ events during the past month, our city traditionally chooses to set aside a week every July to honor and embrace or LGBTQIA+ residents, and uphold them in our own way – apart from the national mainstream. I look forward to kicking off our city’s 18th Annual Newark Pride Week with a flag raising at Newark City Hall on Monday, July 10, and encourage our residents to engage in that and all other Pride Week activities.

“In light of national legislation leaning away from inclusion and justice, I call on all Newarkers to stand as staunch allies and advocates of our LGBTQIA+ neighbors and businesses. Together, we are ‘Newark and Proud of It!’”
