Fairfield Police Warns Residents About Mailing Checks

Posted Mon, Jul 17, 2023, From Fairfield Police
Fairfield (NJ) – The Fairfield Police Department is urging the public to carefully consider sending checks through the U.S. Mail. According to the USPS, there has been a recent surge in attacks on letter carriers as well as mail fraud, stating that 305 mail carriers were robbed in the first half of 2023, compared to 412 total in 2022. If writing and mailing a check cannot be avoided, the safest practice is to use a black gel pen. The gel absorbs into the fibers of the check and will ruin any attempt to alter it.

Over the last several months, we have seen an uptick in the West Essex area of people being victims of mail fraud. “If you have the ability to pay online, or take your check directly to its location, we highly recommend you do that,” said Officer Stacy Chiarolanza. “Make sure to monitor your bank accounts frequently in the event you must mail out a check to ensure it has be cashed or deposited properly.”
