This morning’s Gathering is a dramatic reading, by member performers Jim Norman, Rob Eigenbrod, and Ed Gross, of the official transcript of a 1958 hearing in Newark by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. The hearing targeted John F. Norman, father of member Jim Norman, who used the experience as an opportunity to school the committee on the Constitution and the distinctions between criminal and political activity.
Jim Norman will play the part of his father. Rob Eigenbrod will play the parts of Reps. Edwin F. Willis of Louisiana and Gordon H. Scherer of Ohio, edited for dramatic purposes into a single character. Ed Gross will play the part of Richard Arens, committee staff director and chief interrogating counsel.
